Artist Statement
I am a Brighton-based artist specialising in mixed media abstract paintings, which explore composition and colour. My work also includes graphic, digital and photographic art.
Prior to studying Arts & Media at the University College Of The Creative Arts Farnham, I went to City College Brighton and Hove where I gained a triple merit BTEC Multimedia National Diploma with distinctions in Art & Design Exploration, Application and Realisation. For my final major project, I explored the psychological impact and relationship of contrasting sounds and images in a short film. It was influenced by various artists, directors and cinematic techniques including stop-motion animation.
My passions include aspects of art, music, film, TV and photography and I combine these elements whenever possible.
In much of my work I tend to explore composition and abstraction to create visual impact and aesthetic beauty. My abstract paintings are inspired by subliminal thoughts and the subconscious. Many of the images begin spontaneously; I then develop these into visually striking expressions of original ideas. By contrast, other works are interpretations of more specific concepts.
Much of my inspiration comes from my photographic work as well as using found imagery as a basis for creating imaginative responses. This aspect of my work includes creating images using digital technologies. I am also experienced in more traditional darkroom techniques.
My photographic work often deals with issues such as urban landscape and decline, and the day to day environment, which we inhabit. Although I often portray instances of decay, road kill, vandalism and waste, I do not see these subjects as negative. They are simply a reality in which we live. I explore the aesthetic qualities of this subject matter, drawing attention to positive visual potential through powerful imagery.
I show the interaction of nature and townscape as existing in a relationship which is jarring, surprising and yet, often harmonious. In this field of my work I try to enable and challenge the viewer to see images from my perspective, which sometimes involves humorous elements.
